Birds In Your Garden

Me and my mum are currently making our garden a special place for wildlife, we are growing vegetables and flowers, setting up bird baths and more! In this process I think we are learning lots about the animals that live in our garden, especially now that David Attenborough has released his new series Secret Garden on BBC iPlayer. In this post I will be talking all about birds in your garden and how to support them.

Feeding Birds

Reccent studies have shown that bird feeders are incredibly bad for our native birds. Birds from different countries carry diseases that they are immune to then sit on bird feeders and eat, giving other birds those diseases too (find out more by clicking here to see what the RSPB have to say). This doesn't mean you cannot feed the birds that visit your garden! You can plant flowers so insects will come to your garden (sunflowers work well for this), plant berry bushes (we have raspberries and wild strawberries) for the birds to eat and make sure that there are moist, muddy patches in your garden for worms to live in.

How Do I Identify The Birds In My Garden?

There are some great books out there that you could try, I have some on my resources page that I use, I also have a online bird encyclopedia on my resources page that I have made (it is quite small at the moment). Some other places to try would be the RSPB website or you could get an app on your phone or tablet.

How Can I Provide A Good Nesting Spot For The Birds In My Garden?

There are three different ways I would recommend:

  1. Caring for any trees around your area as they can make good nesting material.

  2. Put up a bird box in your garden.

  3. Plant some ivy or vines on a wall or fence for birds to nest in.
